From Ráth Maoláin to Rome

Turas na dTaoiseach nUltach tar Sáile is Tadhg O Cianáin’s contemporary narrative of the so-called ‘Flight of the Earls’

To mark the anniversary of the Flight of the Earls, the Pontificial Irish College, in collaboration with the Irish embassies to Italy and to the Holy See, have commissioned a new translation of Tadhg O Cianáin’s account of the journey of Hugh O’Neill to Rome in 1606-7. This unique Gaelic text is now presented in a vibrant English language version with accompanying notes and apparatus. Nollaig O Muraíle’s lucid translation incorporates the best in contemporary Irish scholarship, marrying his skills in literary criticism with an acute historical sense.

Dr Nollaig Ó Muraíle is a lecturer in the Department of Irish, National University of Ireland, Galway.

Edited by Nollaig O Muraíle and incorporating work by Paul Walsh († 1941) and Tomás Ó Fiaich († 1990)
